What is an MOT?
The MOT is a yearly test that checks your car meets the minimum road safety and environmental standards. In England, Scotland and Wales most cars need their first MOT when they're three years old, then every year after that.
What does it check?
The tester checks the condition of parts including:
- lights, indicators and the horn
- brakes, tyres and wheels
- steering and suspension
- seatbelts and seats
- windscreen, wipers and washers, and mirrors
- exhaust, emissions and fuel system
- body structure, doors and the registration plates
The MOT doesn't check the engine, clutch or gearbox in detail — that's what a service is for.
How much does an MOT cost?
The government sets a maximum fee — currently £54.85 for a car. Many garages charge less, which is why it's worth comparing. Prices on LocateMyMechanic are set by each garage and include VAT.
When can I get my MOT done?
You can have it done up to a month (minus a day) before your current MOT runs out and still keep the same renewal date. You can check when your MOT is due, and your car's MOT history, for free on GOV.UK.
What if my car fails?
The garage will tell you what needs fixing. Many garages offer a free or reduced-price partial retest if the repairs are done within a set time — ask the garage when you book. You can't drive a car that has “dangerous” faults until they're repaired.
